A great-grandfather who was using a walker while crossing a Reseda street in San Fernando Valley, was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Monday morning, Aug. 26. This marks another among multiple wrongful death incidents to occur in Los Angeles this month.
The early-morning incident occurred near White Oak Avenue and Valerio Street, stated a sergeant with the Los Angeles Police Department Valley Traffic Division, who is overseeing the investigation. The 83-year-old was walking eastbound across Valerio Street in a marked cross walk, according to authorities.
While two drivers going northbound let the man cross, a third driver traveling southbound drove through the crosswalk, and collided with the man. Witnesses state the man flew onto and off of the car before landing on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
While witnesses were unable to get a license plate number, they were able to describe the car that struck the victim as a late-model black Nissan 300 ZX, between 2000 and 2006. Police state the car likely has hood and front windshield damage, as well as damage to the back window.
The victim is survived by six adult children, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The victim's daughter stated that her father was sharp and never let advancing age slow him down. "He was someone that I wish everyone could be," she said.
At the same time, she had a message for the driver whose car, witnesses said, never slowed down up to the point of impact, "I wish he cannot sleep without thinking about what he did to my family."
Authorities state investigators canvased businesses along Valerio Street with the hope surveillance video might reveal the wanted driver's identity.
No one should have to cope with the tragic consequences of a personal injury incident, caused be the patent negligence of another. While the sorrow will never end for the families of victims who die at the hands of such misfortunes, steps to hold liable parties accountable may be taken.
