Jonathan Soto's life changed roughly two years ago on the beach near Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach. That's where he was run over by a city pickup driven by a maintenance employee looking for trash.
Soto's pelvis was hurt so badly that it pains him to this day.
"He shed a tear, you know, because he's had some suffering because of his injuries." - David Lira
Soto, 66, with the help of advocate David Lira and co-counsel Alex Steele, won the support of the Los Angeles County jury, which awarded Soto roughly $2.3M for his injuries. Soto had been dozing on the beach the morning of Feb. 4, 2014, when the Long Beach Parks & Recreation pickup - a large Dodge Ram - ran Soto over.
According to the original complaint, Soto was asleep and didn't hear the approaching pickup. The driver did not see him on the beach, even though Soto was in a clear line of sight, and was distracted while behind the wheel.
