As one of our California readers, you may have gone through some type of surgery in the past. Furthermore, you may be faced with the same type of situation moving forward. While most people are fortunate enough to make it through surgery without any errors, others are not as lucky.
Every year, preventable surgical errors plague thousands of people from one side of the country to the next. According to a study completed in 2012, taking into consideration data from events between the years 1990 and 2010, 80,000 of these events occurred over the 20 year time span.
These incidents, often referred to as "never events" can lead to serious injury or even death. The leader of the study from Johns Hopkins University added the following, after discussing the fact that some things in the health care field cannot be prevented:
"But the events we've estimated are totally preventable. This study highlights that we are nowhere near where we should be and there's a lot of work to be done."
Even with precautions in place, such as advanced safety procedures meant to prevent surgical errors, there is nothing that can be done to guarantee that a mistake will not occur.
Preventable surgical errors are a common concern among patients faced with a procedure. Additionally, hospitals and medical professionals are just as concerned about the potential of such an issue. In the event that people are victims of a surgical error, they may wish to consult with a personal injury attorney who can explain and protect their rights as patients.
