Suspect identified in Santa Ana fatal accident

Santa Ana police have identified a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run accident as also a documented gang member on probation. The victims were two men killed after a black Audi rear-ended a black Nissan after 11 a.m. on Aug. 23 across from the Matchpoint Tennis Academy in Cabrillo Park.

Police reports state the Audi, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, ran a stop sign before crashing into the Nissan. Both men inside the Nissan were declared dead at the scene. Meanwhile, police identified the Audi's driver as a local 21-year-old and a gang member.

Those who witnessed the accident told police the Audi's driver exited his car, checked both doors of the Nissan, and when he couldn't open either, he left the scene, and headed east on Fruit. Witnesses further state the suspect was also talking on a cell phone. Further accounts state the suspect turned into a condominium complex, which police searched as they scoured the neighborhood.

At the same time, the Audi's passenger was last seen northbound on foot on Cabrillo Park Drive, according to authorities. Accounts vary among witnesses with some suggesting the Audi may have been racing, while other witnesses thought they saw the driver and passenger texting.

One Santa Ana resident told reporters that she knew the two men who died, and had run to the accident to assist them. She said the passenger was a 50-year-old father who worked as a groundskeeper at her apartment complex. The resident also knew the driver, a 53-year-old father who lived at the complex.

According to the resident, the passenger was unconscious when she approached the vehicle and the driver moved only slightly when she called his name. The two men reportedly died shortly thereafter.

A nighttime vigil in honor of the two men -- reportedly best friends -- was held. The two were en route to get supplies for a local barbeque to be held that weekend.

At the same time, authorities believe someone is aiding the suspect to elude authorities, stating as well that he may have ties to individuals in the Tustin area.

Personal injury can carry extreme consequences to those who are accused of these ordeals. Proper legal representation may be prudent.
